Selected work · Small business infrastructure
Modernising a long-standing small-business IT environment.
A controlled, phased move from a legacy Windows Small Business Server to Microsoft 365 and a simpler, more supportable technology platform.
Ongoing project
The starting point
Fifteen years of dependencies could not be replaced in one isolated change.
A long-standing small-business client had an environment built around an approximately 15-year-old Windows Small Business Server. Email, identity, storage, workstation policies and network services had become interdependent over time.
The requirement was not simply to replace a server. The business needed to modernise without disrupting daily work, while continuing to use its specialist hosted business software and preparing for a separate move from copper broadband to full fibre.
The client is intentionally unnamed while the final project phases remain in progress. The work is described without disclosing sensitive technical or operational detail.
The programme
Several connected changes, managed as one transition.
- 01Migrate company email from on-premises Exchange to Microsoft 365
- 02Move users and workstations away from the legacy Windows domain
- 03Introduce new network storage and migrate company data
- 04Update, secure and standardise workstations
- 05Resolve dependencies with the hosted line-of-business system
- 06Coordinate fibre, routing and remaining network changes
- 07Retire the legacy server once every dependency is confirmed
What the work revealed
Legacy problems are often found in the dependencies, not the original plan.
As the work progressed, old server-based policies and workstation issues emerged that were not visible at the outset. One important workstation could not be treated as a routine upgrade without creating unnecessary risk.
Instead of repeatedly attempting an unreliable in-place repair, Opriva planned a controlled rebuild alongside the next infrastructure phase. The remaining network changes are also being coordinated with the fibre installation, avoiding two rounds of disruption and duplicated configuration.
Opriva has worked directly with the client’s hosted business-software provider to resolve Microsoft 365 email integration, printing, local file workflows and connectivity, while helping staff adapt to the new operating environment.
Delivery principles
Modernisation without losing sight of the business.
- Protect day-to-day business continuity throughout the transition
- Resolve hidden legacy dependencies rather than carrying them forward
- Coordinate connectivity, infrastructure and supplier changes in the right sequence
- Choose controlled rebuilds where repeated in-place repair would introduce more risk
- Leave a simpler environment that can be maintained proactively
